FROM HATCHERY TO PLATE
The global market for sea cucumber is currently the Chinese community; be it in Asia or overseas. Indian Ocean Trepang is specialized in breeding and growing the Holothuria scabra sea cucumber species (“sandfish”). All products derive from aquaculture and IOT enjoys the use of a patented “in-vitro” artificial reproduction process.
The hatchery is running all year round and is solar-powered. IOT is the exclusive licensee of a patented “in-vitro” artificial reproduction process.
After a growing period of ~18 months from reproduction time, adults are harvested and processed to “trepang”, which is the dried skin of the sea cucumber and the final product being marketed.
The largest markets are China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Northern America and Europe. The trepangs are sold “as is” in “dry-markets” and rehydrated, frozen and ready-to-cook in Modern-Trade outlets.
